Southern Illinois University, home to over 20,000 students, is one of Illinois’ most comprehensive public universities. As a campus that has seen outstanding athletic achievement over the years, SIU takes pride in its student recreation center. With a total of 213,747 square feet, the recreation center is one of the largest on a college campus in the United States. The center provides students and faculty with exceptional resources for healthy and fit lifestyles.
The recreation center at SIU offers features such as: martial arts, aerobics, weight and cardio machines, group fitness classes, a precision cycling area, rock climbing wall, 200 meter competition track as well as a suspended jogging track. The recreation center also provides a lifestyle enhancement center, fully equipped with nutritionists and personal trainers. Southern Illinois University also houses one of the nation’s top aquatic facilities, which is attached to the recreation center. The aquatic center includes a 50 meter indoor competition pool and diving tower.
The original recreation center was designed by famed architect Ralph Rapson in the 1970s. David Greusel designed the addition, which included the two running tracks, a multi-court gymnasium, and new handball/racquetball courts as well as additional circulation and support space. The addition follows the architectural cues of the original to create a seamless environment for students and guests.
