David Greusel led the design team for St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School, a new elementary school located in midtown Kansas City. St. Paul’s serves an eclectic mix of students including the children of well-to-do parishioners as well as underprivileged youth who live in the neighborhood.
The school replaced an older facility that was destroyed by fire, which the church had acquired from the city school district. Since reopening, the school has seen enrollment rise to capacity. The school is organized around three schools-within-a-school, for children in grades K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. This allows the formation of smaller communities of students within the larger school program. Common spaces are provided for each school-within-a-school for group gatherings and indoor activities.
On the east side of the site, common facilities such as administration, gymnasium and library are arrayed along a horizontal and vertical circulation spine that organizes the building clearly for users and guests.
